Beltran

The Mets signed Carlos Beltran to a 7 year, $119 contract in the offseason. I praised this move, as did most of the baseball world, along with Pedro Martinez, the Mets signed the two premier free agents of last year's crop.

Here are Beltran's numbers:

.285 BA, .342 OBP, 7 HR, 29 RBI.

Those are the stats of a good major leaguer. Not a superstar. Here is a list of players that have at least 5 more HR's than Carlos Beltran does right now:

Carlos Delgado, Jeff Kent, Reggie Sanders,Heep Seop Choi, Vernon Wells, Melvin Mora, Manny Ramirez, Pat Burrell, Aramis Ramirez, Richie Sexon, Cliff Floyd, Morgan Ensberg, Bobby Abreu, Andruw Jones, Adam Dunn, Albert Pujols, Carlos Lee, Troy Glaus, David Ortiz, Paul Konerko, Mark Teixeira, Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee, Miguel Tejada, A-Rod.

Now there are quite a few big HR hitters on that list, but some of them have no place having 5 or more HR's than Carlos Beltran does right now. And that list is a lengthy one even while excluding so many other who have more dingers than Beltran. Here are a few more names that simply have more HR's than Carlos:

Kevin Mench, Jason Bay, Ryan Klesko, Daryle Ward, Richard Hidalgo, Tino Martinez, Dimitri Young, Felipe Lopez, Chase Utley, David Wright, Jay Gibbons, David Dellucci, AJ Pierzynski, Joe Crede, Carl Everett, Pedro Feliz, Travis Haffner, and many more!

Carlos Beltran needs to catch fire if the Mets hope to contend. They have no offensive threat besides Cliff Floyd and a developing David Wright. They are on the verge of collapse once again.

Thank God for Pedro.
